We are still fully operational, it is quite hard at these times to see when flights will pick back up, however more flights are flying every week, but regulations are increasing across the world as COVID remains a high priority for nations receiving tourists from the United Kingdom. We have recently been abroad for a short while, as booking volumes are low and we bring back with us a tip about flying with a face mask on your faces, do not bring just a single face mask into the airport with you, bring more than just a couple of face masks for each person flying, as we found on our long haul flight that our COVID face mask snapped, and that security liked to see people fully geared up and prepared for their journey both ends of the security checks through these times.
The airport (Heathrow) that we travelled through was incredibly quiet, some shops at terminal 2 were completely closed, when we arrived abroad, we could see that tourism had hit Hong Kong severely, however the airport was in full swing at Hong Kong, as it was considered no longer in high risk at that time.
When we flew short distance earlier in the summer (July time), we found the restrictions had not come into full force, but tourism had been hit fully, we expect due to tourism being so badly hit, that if you are booking a long way in advance through travel websites, that businesses such as hotels might go into liquidation (so be cautious if booking a year ahead etc).
Many hotels from reports we read, have permanently shut their doors already, meaning that many places across Europe and the Caribbean are suffering from this COVID situation, this see’s that you must be careful when booking outside of travel operators, as over 10% of the worlds hotels have closed through this situation according to an article published in September by the financial times.
A lot of travel operators are not having to pay staff costs through these times, HAYS travel (tour operator) reported heavy losses, however TUI reported only minimal losses through this crisis that the world is suffering, this does not mean that your booking is protected at all under ATOL policy, but that if you are abroad at the time, that you shall be rescued free of charge.
We do not advise travelling abroad at these times for your own safety, but we do see that there are plenty of safe locations for customers to travel towards, with many parts of the world returning to normal, government regulation suggests that the second wave may get better through all charts in just a short while.

The government directive for car manufacturers is clear, that air pollution in the United Kingdom is causing unhealthy amounts of toxins in our ingested breath, and that we must look as businesses to find cost effective ways of reducing the harmful toxins in the air surrounding towns and cities across the UK. Haulage companies have responded for many years, purchasing many Hybrid ultra-low emission diesel lorries, which do better mileage as a whole, making some of the diesel Hybrid ranges very attractive to the transport industry as a whole.
The Police force frequently choose diesel Hybrids as well, meaning that the public sector enforcement teams across the UK are also improving on public health as a whole. Beyond this our Ford Tourneo Trend has a hybrid diesel engine, transforming fuel into its carbon filters, meaning for a mini van in its class it releases the least amount of emissions in the entire Western world, making it one of the most ultra-low emitting vehicles on its engine size.
Many taxis companies across the South West of England and London also use Hybrid diesels, they generally have played a huge part in reducing toxins in the air across the UK as a whole. The Stobart industry haulage firm even uses enhanced filters on their lorries, meaning that barely any air pollution is carried away from their vehicles at all, Hybrid taxis have always been around and most diesel taxis released under Ford, BMW, Mercedes & VW have been hybrid for over ten years. The fact is that carbon filters define the difference between hybrid vehicles and non-hybrid vehicles, and in the last five years most diesel cars have become Hybrid, meaning that almost all taxis on the roads these days which are diesel are ultra-low emitting diesel vehicles.
BMW lead the way, with the top rated hybrid ratings, followed on by Ford and then VW who make all the engines for Skoda and Mercedes, while our vehicles are not BMW’s, they are Fords. In comparison to the series 3 M sport estate BMW our Ford Mondeo due to a smaller output, fares slightly better than BMW, The Ford Tourneo wins hands down against the X5 BMW, and while we would of loved to have driven BMW with you to all the airports, we are afraid our taxis are Fords.
Dedicated courier contract (s) are welcome, but we can only take certain work on a fixed term basis. We have found the best way to provide agreement (s) with companies is to offer ourselves on a completely flexible agreement (s). This means that we prefer all contract (s) to be placed on monthly or sometime bi-weekly rolling contract (s).
We prefer money to be taken up front, as many corporates have been quite poor at paying us, unfortunately this has meant that driver (s) have had to be paid and we have had to continuously chase debt (s) owed to us, however we are happy with companies that can provide recent audit (s) if requested, to take payments at the end of a two week cycle or a monthly cycle, as long as the amount owed continues to get paid on time. Are airport transfer driver (s) rich?
In short the answer is NO!
In long the answer is after we pay ourselves by the hour to drive to the airport and back, calculate how much fuel we have used for the transfer, pay our annual road tax and licensed taxi or private hire insurance, fixed up the car a hundred times with a hoover and a chemical wash, repaired the vehicle monthly and watch the taxi or private hire vehicle drop in resaleable price we barely earn anything.
Key to being an airport or seaport taxi driver, is being prepared to work twenty four hour (s) a day and getting used to being cut up on the side of the road by tourist (s) and work commuters while trying to negotiate the exact arrival of an easy jet flight from Benidorm to avoid paying parking cost (s) at some of the world (s) most expensive car park (s).
But is driving a taxi fun?
Well, I have to say (James Macleod here), yes, it is, it is enjoyable being free of an office and a working structure set out by people (s) habit (s). Most transfer drivers enjoy the company of happy people going on holiday and like hearing that it (s) hotter where they went rather than colder than the United Kingdom (accept in July).
My favourite part (s) of this job is fleet service station, free parking for two hour (s), a Starbuck (s) and a takeaway Harry Ramsden, oh and of course a flight arriving on time at Luton or Stansted. We tend to find at Gatwick flight (s) are almost impossible to predict arrival times and journey time (s) vary hugely, however at Heathrow everything accept in snow or fog arrives pretty much on time.
Bristol airport is a no go zone for us, we track your flight and your still in Spain, we then check the arrival hall board (s) and your coming through security. However these aches and pain (s) are all good fun, because all we have to do is keep smiling and drive safely, while providing are usual service.
Seaport transfers are the least predictable transfer (s) on our book (s), we are able to adapt with advanced notice to your requirements and we can transfer you to an airport or seaport in the United Kingdom. We tend to find that airport transfer (s) generally run pretty smoothly, but with seaport transfer (s) often your ship is running on one engine and your late. Do not fear, we are able to wait for up to four hour (s) without additional charges and transfer booking windows with cruise ships are usually two-hour windows. By this we mean that you can get up to six hour waiting times free of charge with cruise ship transfers upon your return as long as you pre-notify us at the time of the bookings.

Parking in the long stay car parking at airports using the meet and greet services costs between £50 and £100 per week, advance booking is advised as this will save you money. In recent years many stories have been published in the national newspaper about meet and greet services not keeping your car safely parked and that has certainly affected a few of our customers in the past. The good news is that most airports have tackled the illegal traders at airport meet and greet services, meaning this year your car at most airports would have been far more likely to be safely parked.
As taxi drivers who mostly transfer people to and from airports, we still witness a couple of airports whereby the illegal traders are still parking meet and greet customers cars on roads and fields. But we are sure you are far less likely to come across problems than you were in the last two previous years.
If you are travelling for more than two weeks or if you are flying long haul to a different time zone, then using an airport transfer service can save you money and also take the stress out of your journeys to and from the airports. We service our cars every 10,000 miles and we specialize in airport transfers.
We have had train station permits to ply for hire at train stations in Dorset and we have seen many trains arrive late every day and frequent train cancellations from either railway strikes or railway suicides. Hill Taxis strongly advises if you are transferring to an airport or seaport by train that you allow extra time for your travel, because your cruise or scheduled flight will not wait for you.
If you are getting an early flight, you might need to use a taxi service to transfer you to the airport as at those times of the day there is no public transport. We often take people to meet their early morning flights and we regularly drive through the night to airports such as Luton airport, Gatwick airport and Stansted airport.
There are other ways of getting to most major airports, National Express coaches offer frequent coaches from Poole and Bournemouth coach stations which go to all London airports, however we strongly advise using a family member, family friend or taxi to get you to the coach station, if you are leaving your travel to the coach station until the very last minute.
On the 16th of October 2019 for example, we transferred two separate customers to Gatwick airport and Heathrow airport, whom both of which were booked to travel by train to these airports. Unfortunately on Wednesday the 16th of October trains were not running to or from London to either Poole, Wool, Moreton, Dorchester South or Weymouth train stations, and this happens more often than you probably realise. These were our first two customers of October to use our airport taxi service due to train service disruption, although in September we received requests for four airport transfers due to immediate train disruption experienced by our passengers, and over the summer we did nine airport transfers due to train disruptions, we find it is very common that the trains locally in Dorset let down their customers.
The coach services are very reliable and they are very good at getting all their customers to all of their destinations. We also have managed to transfer every customer to the airport without any issues at all, every customer made check in and that even includes our two separate passengers on Wednesday the 16th of October 2019, who not only made their flight on time with us, but got there by not using the train service that day.

We do seaport transfers to any UK based seaport
Many people use seaport transfers to get them to cruise and ferry terminals across the whole of the United Kingdom. Hill Taxis has done many cruise transfers and the most popular seaport transfer is from West and South Dorset to Southampton cruise terminals.
From Dorchester a seaport transfer to Southampton cruise terminals is £75 and from Weymouth the price is £80, from Portland the price is £85 and from Bridport to Southampton cruise terminals the price is £90.
While Southampton is most people’s first choice destination for seaport transfers from West and South Dorset, we have transferred people to Portsmouth, Plymouth, Avonmouth, Poole, Dover and Tilbury. There are no hidden charges with our seaport transfers, the price quoted to you is the price you pay, we include waiting times and parking in the price.
When you return from your cruise we will meet and greet you at the arrivals hall and help transfer your luggage to the taxi. We understand that you will be given a boarding time and a disembarkation time when arriving and leaving the cruise ship and we will fit our service around those times to suit your own needs.
Hill Taxis takes bookings up until one year in advance, and we understand that while you will not know the precise boarding time, we are able to work around the time you need to board your cruise ship. We are airport transfer specialists
We started driving people in licensed taxis to airports and seaports on the 1st of July 2018. We have nearly been going a year now as a taxi transfer company and the business is going from strength to strength. The reason for this blog post is that we have now transferred just over 1000 people to airports across the United Kingdom. In addition to transferring over 1000 people to airports, every person made the check in at their airport on time and in an orderly and safe fashion.
As a company we have driven over 100,000 miles in the past 11 months, from transferring customers going on holiday by train to transferring customers flying from airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick. We witnessed drone attacks at Gatwick, we witnessed snow on the motorways to and from Heathrow and we have witnessed smaller things like a pigeon fly into the open window of one of our taxis and join the taxi transfer to Bridport momentarily.
If you are travelling to London Heathrow, we advise leaving Dorchester or Weymouth at least six hours before your scheduled flight. You may not understand why we advise allowing at least six hours, but about 1 in every 10 transfers to Heathrow that we have completed, we have witnessed severe accidents which on occasion have closed the motorways completely. If you are flying from London Heathrow airport, you are advised by the airport to arrive at least three hours before your flight and while you can often make it through security quickly, there are regular hold ups which can cause delays at security points of upwards of 90 minutes.
If you are travelling to London Gatwick, we advise leaving Dorchester or Weymouth at least 7 hours before your scheduled flight is due to depart the airport. The main route we chose to travel to Gatwick airport is the M25 and the M23, this particular stretch of the M25 is some of the busiest motorway in the United Kingdom and congestion can be very unpredictable and very common. While on a good journey to Gatwick we often arrive within two and a half hours of departing Dorchester or Weymouth, one journey took over 5 and a 1/2 hours due to an accident on the M23 and we have had many journeys to Gatwick which have taken over 4 hours to reach the airport.
If you are travelling to Bristol airport, we advise leaving 5 hours before your scheduled flight from either Dorchester or Weymouth, the main reason for this is that at certain times Bristol airport is over used and under staffed. On many occasions we have witnessed ques at the departures hall of over 1000 people trying to check in and get through security. The airport is to small to handle the massive volumes of people who use the airport and on school holidays and in the summer time the airport frequently grinds to a halt.
All our prices include the parking charges which our taxis have to pay to use the airport parking facilities, we also do not charge waiting times if your flight is delayed. The price we charge for airport transfers is a fixed twenty-four-hour rate, the price falls well below the tariffs set out by West Dorset district council and it is sometimes up to 50% off from the licensed taxi meter rate.
